The Ethias Tour de Wallonie (2.Pro) proved to be a demanding week for Team Storck-MRW Bau, presenting the squad with both sporting challenges and valuable opportunities for development. Arriving in Belgium with clear ambitions, the team aimed to target the sprint stages with Matthew Walls while Edgar Cadena focused on achieving a strong result in the general classification. At the same time, the race provided an important learning experience for the team’s young riders Robin Kull, Jakob Neumann, and Paul Keller, all of whom were making their debut at ProSeries level.
The opening stage immediately highlighted the selective nature of the race. Matthew Walls delivered a solid performance to finish 14th in a demanding finale, giving the team a positive start to the week. However, Stage 2 brought a significant setback when a major crash involving five Storck-MRW Bau riders dramatically altered the course of the race for the team. Matthew Walls suffered the most severe injuries and was forced to abandon the race. Medical examinations later confirmed a broken collarbone, six fractured ribs, and a lung injury. The entire team wishes Matthew a full and speedy recovery.
Despite this major disappointment, the squad responded with determination and resilience throughout the remainder of the race. On Stage 3, Álvaro Sagrado represented the team aggressively in the day’s breakaway, showcasing the team’s fighting spirit. A day later, Robin Kull followed suit with a strong performance in the breakaway, ensuring Storck-MRW Bau remained active and visible at the front of the race.
The final stage once again saw Álvaro Sagrado among the key protagonists. As part of a strong breakaway group that included Pim Ronhaar, he played an active role in shaping the race before the escape was finally reeled in within the last ten kilometres. His performance was a testament to the team’s commitment to racing aggressively despite the challenges faced earlier in the week.
The team’s ambitions in the general classification were also affected by circumstances beyond its control. Edgar Cadena battled illness throughout the race and was unable to perform at his usual level, preventing him from competing for a result that reflected his true capabilities.
Although the final results did not fully match the team’s original objectives, Storck-MRW Bau leaves Wallonia with plenty of positives to take away. In the face of adversity, the riders demonstrated exceptional resilience, unity, and determination. The valuable experience gained by the team’s younger riders, combined with the aggressive racing displayed across multiple stages, provides a strong foundation for the races ahead. The Ethias Tour de Wallonie once again highlighted the character, commitment, and fighting spirit that define Team Storck-MRW Bau.
